What brought you to Bumbershoot Aerial Arts?
I had been thinking about aerial arts (really, trapeze) for many years because of a favorite film, Der Himmel ueber Berlin, directed by Wim Wenders. My massage therapist told me about Bumershoot just after it opened, and I signed up for the aerial combo class in January 2010. In an ironic twist, this same massage therapist now has to "fix" my various strains and knots.
What is your favorite apparatus to work on?
I initially signed up for silks because it was the least um, callus-causing. But, I quickly developed a love of rope, and its clean, unpresupposing look. I also love to just swing on it like a monkey.
What is your favorite thing about Bumbershoot?
I love just being there, with the people 've come to know over the past 3+ years, practicing on the equipment. I've done aerial a few other places now around the country, and no place is as friendly, open, or well-maintained as Bumbershoot. It is a true gem!
What kinds of things do you do when you aren’t hanging in the air?
Oh - does that exclude flying trapeze then? I love that, though I've only done a few times. I also love being outside when the weather is nice and the bugs aren't biting. I love to read science magazines, observe the plants and critters that comprise our prairie garden, and play with the fur-children.
What is your favorite dessert?
I actually don't eat sweets...weird, uh?
Do you have a favorite memory from class or performing?
Goodness, there are so many! The moment I did my first drop (Superman) during a private; Joelle is patient with terrified souls like myself...When April brought the "go rope" sign-off to class...Sandy's first silks routine...Meg sliding down the rail (I want to be like her someday)...Amy's first rope class (seduced to the dark side)...Becky rolling her eyes at me (cause I still don't get that wrap)...Charlie smiling even after being bit by chains...Claire's accidental cursing at a new silks trick...Tom teaching me how to juggle...and Coty patiently showing me (again) how to do lat pulses correctly!
What is your philosophy of aerial and life?
With life...simply be kind. Everyone is worth your time and effort. With aerial...be present.
