What brought you to Bumbershoot Aerial Arts?
Meg (and Tom). I met Meg 4 or 5 years ago and from then on every time we saw each other she would tell me, "You should come take classes with me!". Fast forward a few years, and I started working for The Beggar's Carnivale... with Meg (and Tom). I felt so inspired by the amazing aerialists I encountered, and with a lot of encouragement from Meg and Tom, I finally bit the bullet and I bought myself a birthday present; Intro to Silks. I've been hooked ever since!
What is your favorite apparatus to work on?
It's a tie between Hoops and Slings. I also love silks and am gaining a deep respect for trapeze.
What is your favorite thing about Bumbershoot?
The camaraderie and fun, supportive environment. Also, that every victory (no matter how "small") is celebrated.
What kinds of things do you do when you aren’t hanging in the air?
I am the Hiring and Staff Development Manager at Little Fishes Swim School by day and the Studio/Production Manager at VanElla Studios by night. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, belly dancing, spending time with friends and family, and performing (singing).
When you are having a tough day in class, what do you tell yourself?
"Suck it up buttercup. Circus is hard."
"Take the word 'should' out of your vocabulary" (thanks Becky!)
Do you have a favorite memory from class or performing?
The first time I did crossback straddle without any help.
What is your favorite music?
I love all kinds of music, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Pokey LaFarge.
What advice would you give to people about Showcase?
Trust yourself, smile, and point your toes. Also, only you know your choreography, so if you screw up just keep going and don't let it show on your face.
What classes are you taking next session?
Hoop 2/3 and either Silks 2/3 or Trapeze 2.
What is your philosophy of aerial and life?
Work hard, be kind, and never let them see you sweat.
