Open Aerial

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to practice and perfect the skills they have learned in class. Although a qualified instructor will be present, no instruction will be given. These informal practice sessions are a great way to master your own personal aerial goals and to help maximize your progress in class.

All open aerials must be purchased on the website before attending open aerial.  Follow these steps to purchase your open aerial punch:

Beginner students, you’re a good fit for Open Aerial (OA) at BAA if…

  • You have taken at least one full 6 week session class with us.

  • You have been approved by your coach to work on at least a few skills in OA.

  • You consistently remember which skills you have been approved to practice in OA.

  • You remember and/or have notes on the important points about how to do those skills and what NOT to do.

  • You are aware of and able to do those approved skills with at least decent form so that you are not reinforcing poor habits during OA.

  • You are a student who pays close attention in your classes.

  • You have enough body awareness and maturity to recognize your level of fatigue and you consistently make good decisions about when to stop or take breaks.

  • You do not practice skills you have not yet been approved to practice outside of class.
  • You have read, understood, and are able and committed to following the OA rules.

  • You are a respecter and lover of crash mats :).

  • You are good at sharing equipment when needed :)

  • You are able to be inspired by others practicing alongside you who are more advanced without comparing yourself and getting discouraged.

Note: On occasion, students under 18 who fit the above criteria and have been approved by their coach, may participate in OA. Student under 18 must ALWAYS work over a crash mat and they must be consistently in classes at BAA.

Open Aerial Rules for Students

  • You are only allowed to use equipment on which you have obtained instruction from a Bumbershoot Coach.
  • Open studio time is a time to practice skills that you have learned in a class AT BUMBERSHOOT and which have been approved by your coach to practice. It is NOT a time to teach yourself new skills or practice skills that your coach has not yet approved you to practice in OA.
  • You may NOT teach or spot another Open Aerial student on any new skills. Spotting for conditioning exercises, however, is encouraged!
  • If the instructor on duty feels that something you are doing is not safe for you to practice during Open Aerial you must stop until approval is agreed upon by your coach and the instructor on duty.
  • Share the equipment, warm yourself up before getting on it, and always have an appropriate mat underneath you. If this is unclear to you, check with the instructor on duty.
Open Aerial Rules for Non-Bumbershoot Students

  • In addition to the rules above, you must call or email ahead and set up a complimentary orientation with a Bumbershoot coach prior to participating in Open Aerial for the first time.
  • Non-students may not do any drops or rolls during Open Aerial that have not been approved by a Bumbershoot coach.
